BEHIND THE NAME
There’s a reason why we decided to name our company Tortuga Bikini. Here in Florida turtle conservation is a huge deal and Tortuga is the Spanish name for turtle. Florida has some of the most important nesting beaches for loggerhead sea turtles in the world. South Florida beaches also offer nesting habitats for green and leatherback sea turtles, as well as some Kemp’s ridley and hawksbill turtles according to the Gumbo Limbo Turtle Conservation.
All species of sea turtles are either threatened or endangered since the 1970’s mainly because of over-harvesting of sea turtles for meat, eggs, leather and tortoise shells. Today, turtles remain endangered but for different reasons. Collisions with boats, sky glow from artificial lighting, interactions with commercial and recreational fishing gear, loss of nesting habitat, and pollution are examples of what hurts turtles today.
It’s important to conserve these sea creatures not only because it is the right thing to do but also because it’s the right thing to do to help keep our oceans healthy. According to Oceana, sea turtles have helped maintain the health of the world's oceans for more than 100 million years by maintaining productive coral and reef ecosystems and by transporting essential nutrients from the oceans to beaches and coastal dunes. If sea turtle populations continue to decline, so will their ability to fulfill vital functions in the ocean ecosystem.
We not only want to provide our customers fun and flexible bikinis but offer them a chance to give back by helping with turtle conservation. For every bikini sold Tortuga Bikini will donate 10 percent of the profits to Sea Turtle and Ocean conservation.
